The Ahnenerbe, translated as “Ancestral Heritage” (or more accurately Ahnenerbe Forschungs und Lehrgemeinschaft, i.e. “Society for Ancestral Heritage Research and Education”), was a multidisciplinary Nazi research institute founded by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, Herman Wirth and Walther Darré on July 1, 1935. Integrated into the SS in January 1939, the Ahnenerbe was headquartered in Munich. The institute's object was to study “the sphere, spirit, achievements and heritage of the northern Indo-European race”, using archaeological research, racial anthropology and the cultural history of the Aryan race as its tools. Its aim was to prove the validity of Nazi theories on the racial superiority of Aryans over supposedly inferior races, and to Germanize the peoples occupying Nazi Lebensraum.
