In 1934, Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer of the SS, signed a 100-year lease for 100 Reichsmark per annum with the district of Paderborn to rent the castle, which he intended not only to renovate and remodel as an SS management school (Reichsführerschule SS), but also to use as SS headquarters. A center of study and spiritual training for the SS, the castle is also a museum, dedicated to the Germanic art and archaeology so dear to Himmler, and supplied with the results of Ahnenerbe excavations; also on display are reproductions of the regalia - crown, globe and scepter - of the German emperor, as well as the Lance of St. Longin. Organized as a place of study, the castle also contains a library of 12,000 volumes, all devoted to Germanic history.
A place of research, the castle is also a place of worship. Neopagan ceremonies are held here, and the crypt under the north tower is permanently lit by the eternal flame of the SS.
Two chambers were built in the castle's north tower, which was completely transformed for the occasion. These can still be visited today:
a representative room, the Obergruppenführersaal (“room of the Obergruppenführer”, i.e. literally: “room of the generals”). On the marble floor is a dark-green, circular mosaic ornament, with a gold disc in the middle. The term “Black Sun”, referring to the Wewelsburg sun wheel, came into use after the Second World War.
Basement: an unfinished prayer chamber for the dead. Shortly before the end of the war, the SS blew up the room, which was partially destroyed.
